Operating from an island presents unique connectivity challenges, making resilient and high-capacity international links essential for economic growth, digital services, and business continuity. Reliable connectivity ensures low latency, uninterrupted access to global platforms, and the performance required by enterprises, cloud services, and consumers alike.
A Robust and Diversified International Network
Melita has built a highly resilient and diversified international network designed to deliver reliable, high-performance connectivity between Malta and mainland Europe.
International traffic from the Melita Data Centre in Madliena to mainland Europe is transited through diverse submarine cables, which terminate in Sicily at Pozzallo and Catania. Both Points of Presence (PoPs) in Sicily are linked, enabling an end-to-end Layer 1 ring between Malta and continental Europe. Each Melita PoP in Sicily connects to two distinct PoPs in Milan via several protected Layer 2 links through mainland Italy. These high-capacity links are provided by diverse suppliers.
In Milan, Melita peers with the world’s largest Tier I internet providers, including Colt, Arelion, Cogent and Google. To further strengthen the quality of internet service in Malta, Melita’s AS12709 peers with other carriers and key global content providers on the Frankfurt Internet Exchange and the Milan Internet Exchange respectively.
Expanding Reach with Direct Peering at the Amsterdam Internet Exchange
To further strengthen service quality and international diversity, Melita has added direct peering at the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), one of the world’s largest Internet Exchanges and a key European digital hub.
By connecting directly to AMS-IX, Melita can exchange traffic more efficiently with a broad ecosystem of global carriers, cloud providers, and content platforms. This results in lower latency, improved resilience through greater geographic diversity, and enhanced performance for streaming, cloud services, gaming, and enterprise applications — delivering a faster and more reliable internet experience for customers in Malta.
Strengthening Malta’s Digital Future
With direct connectivity to Amsterdam complementing its existing infrastructure in Milan and Frankfurt, Melita continues to reinforce Malta’s position as a digitally connected island economy. By investing in international peering, network diversity, and strategic interconnection hubs, Melita ensures that its customers benefit from world-class internet performance despite Malta’s geographic location.
